Tourism Development

Endowed with a varied natural landscape conducive to sports and adventure activities, a wide range of cultural, historical and religious sites and other unique natural resources, Georgia is well-positioned to compete in the growing worldwide travel market. In particular, the growth in tourism niches such as nature/ecotourism, cultural, and agritourism will play to the advantage of the diverse offerings of Georgia.

While the industry suffers from a number of constraints, including a lack of qualified human resources, inadequate infrastructure, inefficient transportation, feeble promotion and unstable international image, many of these challenges could be addressed effectively through the private-public partnership. In order to compete globally against other more "established" and "well-known" destinations, Georgia’s competitiveness in the tourism industry will be largely dependent on a combination of factors which includes a low cost environment, improved access transport, increased resources for destination marketing, better trained labor, favorable tax-based investment environment to attract infrastructure investments in addition to significant public investment. In addition, the initiatives also need to be underpinned by strong partnership between industry and Government.

Tourism generates employment on a broad basis. It requires trained service personnel, hotel managers, good transportation facilities, guides and tour leaders. Tourism generates incentives and opportunities for producers of handicrafts, clothing, guidebooks, art and jewelry to market their production. In line with the tourism development strategy being worked out by the Department of Tourism and Resorts, the SME Support Project is currently implementing some tourism-oriented initiatives to provide diversified assistance for sustainable tourism development in Georgia.
